When it comes to start home brewing, there are numerous devices available. When you think about starting home brewing, it’s very hectic to choose which method suits you without draining your pocket. Additionally, there are many questions about which device to start with and which beans to use. In this article, I will try to sort out these issues.
Don’t Overcomplicate
Forget what you’ve seen in my videos and other videos on the internet for a moment. Understand the fundamental principle: coffee is packed with numerous beautiful flavors waiting to be unlocked with the right technique and water. To truly appreciate and explore the depth of coffee, we’ll begin with a basic setup. This will allow you to experience and understand the essence of brewing, laying the foundation for your coffee journey before investing in and draining money on unnecessary equipment.
You Need 4 Elements to Start Home Brewing
- A brewing device
- A scale to weigh coffee beans and water
- A kettle or any other setup for hot water
- And finally, a perfect choice of beans
The Grinder Question
Don’t invest in a grinder initially because my goal is for you to experience the magic of coffee on a budget. Buying a grinder can be expensive, and if you’re not familiar with grind settings, it’s best to start with pre-ground coffee from reputable roasters. Once you’ve gained some experience and feel the need to explore further, you can invest in a grinder.
My List for Beginners
1. Brewing Device: French Press
To get started with home brewing, I always recommend the French press because it is simple to use, doesn’t require any fancy equipment, and doesn’t need consumables like filter paper. You can also use it in limited spaces, like a hostel room.
Do you really need a weighing machine? If you ask me, my answer is definitely yes. To improve your coffee’s flavor, you need to know how much water and coffee beans you’re using each time. So, it’s worth considering the investment.
In this setup, you don’t need any fancy kettle or gooseneck kettle. You don’t need to invest in an electric kettle if your accommodation already has a means to boil water. However, water dispensers with hot water features are not recommended. In that case, you should consider buying a kettle that fits your budget.
4. Coffee Bean
I have already written an article recommending beans for this French press setup. Please refer to that article for my suggestions and recommendations. Click to read..
The above recommendations are based on my own experience. If you have any personal preferences, feel free to purchase products according to your interests. It’s your hard-earned money, so the decision is yours.
